Blog Michiana

Hello everyone! Welcome to BlogMichiana.com! It is my hope that this blog will cover life and living in the Michiana area. As this is a brand new blog, I can’t be too specific about exactly what this will entail.

First things first though, what is Michiana?

It’s a melding of Michigan and Indiana, and encompasses 7 counties between both state– Elkhart, La Porte, Marshall, St. Joseph, and Starke Counties in Indiana, and Berrien and Cass Counties in Michigan. Michiana centers on South Bend, IN and the surrounding area. I live in the “surrounding area” so South Bend, Mishawaka and Elkhart is likely where most of this website’s focus will end up.

Where did the name come from?

Apparently the South Bend Tribune held a contest to name the area and Michiana was the winning entry. I’ve been trying to find out when the contest was held, but so far the best I’ve come up with is the “early 20th century.” I don’t know about you, but that doesn’t narrow it down a whole lot for me.

Since Michiana is not a legal entity of any sort, you’ll find as many definitions of the area as you’ll find people to ask. Right here is where you’ll find mine!
